The Host/Hostess is responsible for welcoming and seating guests, managing reservations, and ensuring a positive first impression of the restaurant. This role involves coordinating with front-of-house staff to ensure smooth operations and maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Guest Reception and Seating
o Greet guests warmly as they enter the restaurant and provide them with a pleasant welcome.
o Manage the seating chart and assign tables based on availability and guest preferences.
o Escort guests to their tables and provide menus.
2. Reservation Management
o Answer phone calls and respond to reservation inquiries promptly.
o Manage and update the reservation system, ensuring accurate booking records.
o Handle special requests and accommodate guest preferences as much as possible.
3. Customer Service
o Address guest inquiries and concerns with a professional and courteous attitude.
o Assist in managing guest flow during peak hours to minimize wait times and ensure smooth operations.
o Provide guests with information about the restaurant’s menu, specials, and services.
4. Coordination with Staff
o Communicate effectively with servers and other front-of-house staff to ensure efficient seating and service.
o Coordinate with the kitchen to manage wait times and guest expectations.
5. Maintaining the Host Stand
o Keep the host stand and entrance area clean and organized.
o Maintain up-to-date information on reservations, waitlists, and seating arrangements.
o Ensure that menus, promotional materials, and other guest-facing items are well-stocked and presentable.
6. Handling Payments and Complaints
o Assist with the processing of guest payments and billing inquiries as needed.
o Address and resolve any guest complaints or issues promptly and escalate to management when necessary.
7. Administrative Duties
o Maintain accurate records of reservations, guest preferences, and any special notes.
o Assist with managing the waitlist and seating chart during busy periods.
Qualifications:
• Previous experience as a Host/Hostess or in a customer service role preferred.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic knowledge of reservation systems and customer service best practices.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to stand for extended periods and move around the restaurant efficiently.
• Manual dexterity for handling menus and guest interactions.
Working Conditions:
• Work in a restaurant environment with exposure to noise, heat, and high-traffic areas.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Retro Hospitality has partnered with a group of visionary developers to open the the historic Hotel Petersburg located in downtown Petersburg, Virginia. Closed since 1969 when a fire destroyed the fourth and fifth floors, the development team is working on a top to bottom renovation to bring the property back to life. This upscale boutique hotel will include 64 rooms, street-level dining, a bar, banquet facilities, and an outdoor courtyard. Following the renovation the hotel will highlight the ground floor’s extensive marble work, decorative plaster molding, and coffered ceilings.
