We are seeking an energetic and experienced Group Sales Manager to join the pre-opening Sales team of the first and flagship Canopy hotel in New York City.

Located in the heart of the Penn District, at the corner of 34th Street and 8th Avenue, this 365-room, design-forward lifestyle hotel will feature extensive food & beverage offerings and serve as a brand showcase for Canopy in NYC, steps from Madison Square Garden and Hudson Yards.

Reporting to the Director of Sales, the Group Sales Manager will proactively solicit, develop, and manage group business for the hotel. This position will play an integral role in establishing the hotel's group account base during pre-opening and driving room revenue through strategic prospecting, relationship building, and account management.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated sales professional with strong knowledge of the New York City group market, a passion for building client relationships, and a proven ability to identify opportunities, negotiate business, and close sales.

What You Will Be DoingBuilding Relationships That Generate Group Business

  • Proactively develop and strengthen relationships with new and existing clients to generate group bookings and long-term business.
  • Build the hotel's group account base during the pre-opening phase, identifying accounts and organizations with strong potential for the Penn District location.
  • Conduct sales calls, client appointments, site inspections, entertainment, networking events, trade shows, and familiarization trips as appropriate.
  • Develop relationships with meeting planners, corporate clients, associations, travel partners, entertainment contacts, and other organizations that generate group demand.
  • Build relationships within the New York City business and hospitality communities to expand the hotel's customer base and identify new opportunities.
  • Maintain consistent communication with clients throughout the sales process to ensure high service and responsiveness.
  • Develop strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Partner with Operations, Food & Beverage, Revenue Management, and Event Management to ensure booked business is properly communicated and successfully executed.

Driving Group Sales & Revenue

  • Research, identify, prospect, and qualify new group leads for the hotel.
  • Solicit new and existing accounts through telephone prospecting, outside sales calls, presentations, written communication, networking, and industry events.
  • Respond to group inquiries and RFPs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Prepare proposals, contracts, presentations, and client correspondence in accordance with company and brand standards.
  • Negotiate rates, concessions, and contract terms within established guidelines while protecting the hotel's revenue objectives.
  • Convert qualified leads into definite business and achieve or exceed individual group sales goals.
  • Upsell each business opportunity to maximize room, food & beverage, and other ancillary revenue potential.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat and future business within existing accounts.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up on tentative business and proactively work to convert opportunities.
  • Ensure accurate and complete turnover of definite business to the appropriate Event Management and hotel Operations teams.
  • Maintain accurate account, activity, lead, booking, and production information within the hotel's CRM and sales systems.

Using Market Knowledge to Maximize Revenue

  • Maintain a strong understanding of the New York City group sales market, including market trends, demand drivers, competitive hotels, pricing, and supply and demand.
  • Identify new business opportunities that support individual and hotel revenue goals.
  • Develop an understanding of the hotel's target group customers and their business needs to provide customized solutions.
  • Understand the competitive set's strengths, weaknesses, offerings, and positioning and effectively communicate the value of Canopy New York City.
  • Leverage the hotel's location near Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, Hudson Yards, and Midtown Manhattan to identify group opportunities.
  • Partner closely with the Director of Sales and Revenue Management to evaluate group opportunities based on rate, dates, displacement, demand, and overall revenue potential.
  • Participate in sales and revenue strategy meetings and provide updates on group pace, account activity, tentative business, and market trends.
  • Review account and segment production regularly and develop action plans to achieve established goals.

Delivering the Canopy Experience

  • Develop a strong understanding of Canopy brand positioning, guest experience, and hotel offerings and effectively communicate these differentiators to prospective clients.
  • Conduct engaging and professional hotel tours and site inspections that showcase the property's design, accommodations, food & beverage offerings, and overall guest experience.
  • Represent the hotel professionally at client meetings, trade shows, networking functions, and community events.
  • Maintain high visibility and engagement with clients before, during, and after their programs.
  • Partner with hotel teams to ensure client expectations and important program details are clearly communicated.
  • Seek client feedback and use insights to strengthen relationships and generate repeat business.
  • Follow all company and brand Sales and Catering standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Sales.

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of hotel group sales, account management, prospecting, negotiation, and closing techniques.
  • Knowledge of the New York City group and hospitality market strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to identify and develop new accounts while growing relationships with existing clients.
  • Strong understanding of group pricing, contracts, concessions, room blocks, and hotel revenue principles.
  • Excellent relationship-building, presentation, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to understand client business needs and develop solutions that benefit both the customer and hotel.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple leads, accounts, deadlines, and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and business skills with the ability to evaluate sales opportunities and account production.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and hospitality CRM and sales systems such as Delphi or comparable platforms.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, results-oriented, and comfortable actively prospecting for new business.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Sales, Revenue Management, Food & Beverage, Events, and Operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of hotel sales experience, with direct group sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous New York City hotel sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing group accounts and developing new business preferred.
  • Experience with lifestyle, full-service, luxury, or major branded hotels preferred.
  • Pre-opening or hotel opening experience is a plus.
  • Hilton or Canopy brand experience is a plus.
  • Experience with hospitality CRM and sales platforms such as Delphi or comparable systems preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Hospitality Management, Hotel & Restaurant Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Must demonstrate strong prospecting, relationship-building, negotiation, and closing skills.
  • Must be flexible to attend client events, networking functions, trade shows, site inspections, and other business-related activities that may occasionally occur during evenings or weekends.

The anticipated compensation range for this position is $90,000–$100,000 per year. The salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on several factors, including but not limited to relevant hotel sales experience, New York City market experience, brand experience, education, and qualifications.
